Diyora Keldiyorova became the first judoka in the history of Uzbekistan to win gold medal at the Summer Olympics.
In the weight category up to 52 kilograms, she defeated Distria Krasniqi from Kosovo in the final.
Before that, Uzbek judokas won two silver medals in 1996 and 2008, losing in the finals.
In a country that had no tradition of women’s judo until recently, this is a magnificent feat that will inspire generations of young girls across the country.
Diyora Keldiyorova said, “To change the life of women in Uzbekistan is my mission.”
The XXXIII Summer Olympic Games in Paris are being held from July 26 to August 11.
