The State Flag Day of Azerbaijan is a national holiday in Azerbaijan that is celebrated annually on 9 November. It was established in 2009 by order of President Ilham Aliyev to commemorate the anniversary of adoption of “The Tricolor Flag” as the flag of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in 1918.
The flag symbolizes the sovereignty of Azerbaijan and consists of three horizontal stripes of equal width: a blue stripe on top, followed by a red one, and a green stripe at the bottom. In the middle of the red stripe, on both sides of the flag, there is a white crescent and an eight-pointed star.
The bright blue represents Azerbaijan’s Turkic identity, the red represents progress, and the green represents Islam, which is Azerbaijan’s majority religion.
The State Flag Day of Azerbaijan has been celebrated as a non-working public holiday ever since.
