On 6 September, Bulgaria celebrates one of the most significant events in its modern history – the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia in 1885.
The Unification represents an important moment in the development of the modern Bulgarian state and remains a powerful symbol of unity, determination and a shared vision for the country’s future.
A defining moment in Bulgarian history
Following the Treaty of Berlin in 1878, the Bulgarian territories were divided, with the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia established as separate entities.
Seven years later, on 6 September 1885, the Unification of Eastern Rumelia with the Principality of Bulgaria was proclaimed in Plovdiv. The event became one of the defining achievements of modern Bulgarian history and an important step in the country’s development as a united state.
The meaning of unification today
More than 140 years later, the values associated with the Unification remain relevant. Cooperation, determination and the ability to work towards a common objective continue to play an important role in building strong communities, institutions and businesses.
Today, Bulgaria is part of a connected European economy, welcoming international companies, professionals and investors while continuing to strengthen its position as a business destination in Southeast Europe.
