Revolutionizing Peer-to-Peer Transactions in Czechia with Payment to Contact

In a groundbreaking digital stride, the Czech Republic is embracing a transformative banking service that simplifies peer-to-peer transactions through the revolutionary “payment to contact” project. FCHAIN Corporation, a global consulting company with a substantial presence, including 14 branches worldwide and in Czechia, closely monitors and shares significant developments in finance and legal sectors.

Explaining Payment to Contact:

Czechia is witnessing a digital evolution in its mobile banking system, introducing a service that enables money transfers using mobile phone numbers. The collaborative effort of major banks, including Air Bank, Česká spořitelna, ČSOB, Fio Banka, Komerční Banka, and Raiffeisenbank, under the guidance of the Czech National Bank (ČNB), marks the initiation of the “payment to contact” project. Moneta Money Bank and UniCredit are set to join this innovative initiative in 2024.

How Does Payment to Contact Work?

The “payment to contact” system eliminates the need for traditional bank account details when transferring money. Instead, it simplifies the process by utilizing mobile phone numbers:

  1. Register your phone number with your bank account.
  2. Your bank links the number to your account in the ČNB database.
  3. Inform your contacts that payments can be made via your phone number.
  4. Receive transfers instantly through your mobile banking app.

Key Points about Payment to Contact:

  • Customers of participating banks can seamlessly transfer funds to each other.
  • The maximum transfer amount is CZK 5,000, with no restrictions on the number of transfers.
  • The current system supports only Czech crowns.
  • Applicable exclusively to Czech and Slovak mobile numbers.
  • Regular usage (every six months) is required to maintain the link between numbers and accounts.

Current Transfer Limit:

For security reasons, transfers using phone numbers are presently capped at CZK 5,000. The Czech National Bank recognizes the potential to raise this limit as the system matures, while there is no limit on the number of transfers.

Maintaining Registration:

To ensure continuous access to the “payment to contact” system, account holders must receive funds via the phone-based method at least once every six months. Failure to do so will result in deactivation, requiring re-registration.

Streamlining Transfers and Enhancing User Experience:

The Czech Banking Association emphasizes that this innovation aims to streamline transfers by enabling payments solely through phone numbers, reducing the common errors associated with traditional account numbers. Notably, phone numbers are more memorable and user-friendly.

Supplementary to Traditional Transfers:

It’s crucial to understand that this option supplements, rather than replaces, traditional online and branch-based transfers. Participation remains optional for both customers and banks.

Promising Adoption Prospects:

A survey conducted by the Czech Banking Association revealed that nearly two-thirds of Czech account holders are open to this innovative payment method. Success hinges on proactive registration, emphasizing the potential transformative impact of this modernization effort on Czech banking.

This forward-looking approach, driven by simplicity and convenience, is set to benefit consumers nationwide by providing streamlined access and transforming the overall customer experience. Stay tuned for further updates on this dynamic evolution in Czechia’s financial landscape.
