On 22 September, Bulgaria celebrates its Independence Day, marking the declaration of independence in 1908 and an important moment in the country’s modern history.
The declaration, proclaimed in Veliko Tarnovo, followed decades of political development after the Liberation of Bulgaria in 1878 and the Unification in 1885. It marked Bulgaria’s transition to a fully sovereign state, with the ability to determine its own political and economic direction.
More than a century later, Independence Day remains an important part of Bulgaria’s national identity. The country has since undergone significant economic and social development and today plays an active role in the European business community, attracting international companies, investment and talent.
