World Soil Day

December 5th marks World Soil Day, a global observance dedicated to raising awareness about the critical role soil plays in sustaining life on Earth. Spearheaded by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, this day emphasizes the importance of healthy soil and advocates for sustainable soil management practices.

Each year, World Soil Day adopts a unique theme to highlight pressing soil-related issues. For 2024, the theme is “Soil, Where Life Begins”, focusing on the vital role soil plays as the origin of nutrition, biodiversity, and environmental health.

Soil is much more than just dirt underfoot; it is a finite, non-renewable resource that supports nearly every aspect of life. Our planet’s survival depends on the precious link with soil. Over 95 percent of our food comes from soils. Besides, they supply 15 of the 18 naturally occurring chemical elements essential to plants.

Caring for soil is caring for life!
