International Day of Women and Girls in Science

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science – was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 to address gender disparities in STEM fields. Women remain underrepresented in scientific research, engineering, and technology careers, despite making significant contributions throughout history.

 Why It Matters

  • Women make up less than 30% of the world’s researchers.
  • Many scientific discoveries by women have been historically overlooked or credited to men.
  • Encouraging girls in STEM leads to innovation, economic growth, and diverse perspectives in problem-solving.

2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS) and it is a significant milestone in the global effort to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Gender equality in science is crucial for building a better future for all, yet women and girls continue to face systemic barriers and biases in pursuing scientific careers.

Closing the gender gap in science requires breaking stereotypes, promoting role models to inspire girls, supporting women’s advancement through targeted programs, and fostering inclusive environments through policies and actions that promote inclusion, diversity and equity.
