Georgian Independence Day

Georgian Independence Day is a national holiday celebrated annually on May 26, marking the
country’s declaration of independence.

Although Georgia officially regained independence from the Soviet Union on April 9, 1991, the
nation commemorates the Independence Day declared on May 26, 1918, as its official national
holiday. On this day, in Tbilisi, the National Council of Georgia adopted the Act of Independence,
establishing a democratic, European-style Georgian state. The declaration stated:
“From now on, the people of Georgia are the sole bearers of sovereign rights, and Georgia is a
fully-fledged independent state.”
