Every year on 27 August, World Lake Day draws attention to one of the planet’s most valuable freshwater resources. The international observance was established by the United Nations General Assembly on 12 December 2024, with the first World Lake Day held in 2025. Its purpose is to raise awareness of the importance of lakes and encourage their preservation, restoration and sustainable management.
Lakes are closely connected to everyday life, even when we do not notice it. They provide freshwater for communities, agriculture and industry, while also supporting fisheries, tourism and local economies. They are important habitats for fish, plants, birds and other wildlife, making them an essential part of global biodiversity. Lakes can also help regulate local climates, store carbon and reduce the impact of floods and droughts.
At the same time, these ecosystems are facing growing pressure. Pollution, agricultural runoff, excessive water use, rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns are affecting lake health and water levels. With more than 117 million lakes worldwide, protecting them requires attention not only from governments and environmental organisations, but from businesses and communities as well.
